The Modern Cost of the Confederacy

The issue of Confederate monuments was such a hot topic in the recent past that an article in the December 2018  Smithsonian magazine couldn’t help but get my attention.   Entitled “The Costs of the Confederacy” by Brian Palmer and Seth Freed Wessler, it claims that taxpayers have spent at least $40 million on Confederate monuments and groups that distort history.

Is this appropriate, even in the South?  The article is on line at  https://www.smithsonianmag.com/history/costs-confederacy-special-report-180970731/.  This is one I think it’s best to read and decide for yourself.

    This article is anything but objective. Simply said. It is pointed one sided and is a violation of the basic chareer and mission statement of the Smithsonian, funded 2/3 by American Taxpayers.

    I do not condone slavery and while I am critical OF THE VIOLENT ACTIONS TAKEN BY MANY IN b}BLM, I DO NOT HATE A PERSON BECAUSE OF THEIR HIDE. In fact I spent 30 years defending this nation. But I did not defend it to see it turn into a NAZI Germany which burned books contrary to its ideology or the early USSR who did everything possible to erase the role of the Russian Orthodox church following the Bolshevik revolution.

    This article is as silly as the Vatican demanding the Italian Government to destroy the Coliseum for its role in the execution of slaves in the arean as gladiators, or the persecution of Christians and Caligula’s penchant for only feeding his lions bald headed Jews so as not to upset their stomachs.

    Before the Smithsonian damns those it calls Bigoted it should first define who precisely it is and what it is that is bigoted in act speech and deed.
