Today, in honor of the inauguration, I’m reprinting a poem from my book Some Poems About Life.
I Wish I Had Met…
I wish I had met Washington
To see just how he led
to risk his fortune and his life,
To hear what’s in his head.
I wish I had met Jefferson
To ask him how he wrote.
How those ideas in his brain
made so many a quote.
I wish I had met Franklin
To ask him about his stove.
When it came to new ideas,
the man’s a treasure trove.
But most of all I’d thank them,
for everything they’d done,
for peace and honor and happiness
and liberty hard-won.
